Ad fatigue is a scheduling problem, not a creative one
Frequency is the quietest killer in your account. Nobody sets out to show the same person the same video eight times — but delivery systems drift there on their own, and by the time CTR reflects it, you’ve already paid for the wear.
What frequency actually measures
Frequency is impressions divided by reach: how many times, on average, one person saw your ad. A frequency of 1.5 means fresh eyes. A frequency of 5 means the same audience, again and again — and a video only surprises you once.
Why it hides
Rising frequency doesn’t announce itself. What you see instead is a slow CTR slide and a creeping cost per click — symptoms that look like a dozen other problems. The diagnosis only becomes obvious when you put frequency and CTR side by side: same audience, more exposures, less response. That’s fatigue, not a bad creative.
The fix isn’t a better ad — it’s a different one
A fatigued ad can’t be edited back to life; its audience has simply seen enough. The move is rotation: a genuinely new angle, not a recolored button. ROASTED flags any ad past a frequency of 4 with a below-average CTR and, in the action plan, tells you whether your account needs fresh creative now or still has room to scale existing winners.
Check it weekly
Sort your ads by frequency. Anything above 4 is on borrowed time. Above 6, the audience is saturated — new creative or a new audience, today, before the average catches up.
